Des femmes et leur éducation, 2007 Linen robes, machine embroidery
|
The robes are made from handwoven linen, the nightwear of working class women in pre-war France. The texts are from Laclos' book on the education of women, each a phrase that describes the attributes of the 'natural woman'. Unlike the embroidery of grisette and lorette, this is done by a machine, however much it emulates the script of the hand. The red monogram is hand-stitched, marking each gown as the maker's own. Let me cite Marx: "Political economy conceals the estrangement in the nature of labour by ignoring the direct relationship between the worker (labour) and production. It is true that labour produces marvels for the rich, but it produces privation for the worker. (...) It produces beauty, but deformity for the worker. It replaces labour by machines, but it casts some of the workers back into barbarous forms of labour and turns others into machines.
